• How did you meet your husband and how did you get engaged?

Bernhard and I met in the Netherlands. We met while I was living there, and he was traveling for work. We are both South African, but I immigrated to the Netherlands when I was 18 years old. We started out as only being ‘pen pals’, but deep in our hearts we knew we did not meet by chance. I just knew I was going to marry this boy one day.

We were pen pals for about a year and a half and we saw each other twice during that time. After traveling together in Europe and South Africa, I packed up my whole life and moved back to South Africa to be with him. I moved back in 2018.

We got engaged in December 2019 in Florence, Italy on a mountain overlooking the city at sunset. It was the only day it did not rain.

  • Where did you get married and why did you choose that venue and time of year for your wedding?

We got married at Lunikhy Game Farm and Wedding Venue. We wanted an outdoor, bushveld wedding because we love the outdoors and we wanted our overseas guests to experience a true South African outdoor wedding. It was a perfect mix of nature with a simple with a touch of glamour. We also picked the venue because we could make a weekend of it and there was enough accommodation for at least 50 guests. We got married on 7 March 2021, because that was one of the available dates and number 7 is our lucky number. It was not too hot (Limpopo can be very hot) – they weather was just perfect, and we had the most beautiful sunset.

  • What was the vibe of your wedding?

Our wedding was relaxed, minimalistic and fun. We got married outside under the most beautiful tree and my mom walked me down the aisle. Our wedding was one big reunion and very special – we were fortunate enough to have most of our overseas family and friends here.

  • How did you hear about The Wedding Collective?

I was looking for wedding dresses on Instagram and The Wedding Collective popped up as a suggestion.

  • What made you choose your wedding dress?

My mom who lives in the Netherlands was here to help me pick a dress. When she saw me in the dress and cried, I knew this is my wedding dress and of course it fitted me perfectly.

  • How was your wedding dress experience from fittings to the final product?

I thought picking a wedding dress was going to be my biggest headache. In the chaos of wedding planning, The Wedding Collective was ‘the calm in the storm.’ Mari is organized, on time and very friendly. The Wedding Collective is very flexible, especially if your dress does not fit anymore 2 weeks before the wedding because of weight gain or loss. Mari will make a plan!

  • Do you have any advice or tips for new brides-to-be looking for their perfect wedding dress?

Fit as much different styles of dresses and pick a comfortable dress.

  • Who was your wedding photographer?

Koringkriek Photography. They were able to capture exactly the vibe of our wedding and how my husband and I are as people. They are also the most relaxed & professional photographers and make you feel very comfortable even if you are a bit camera shy.

  • What was your most memorable part of your wedding day?

  • Do you have any advice regarding the overall planning of a wedding?

Don’t stress too much it will always work out perfectly. Your guests will not even know what went wrong. Most of all, enjoy it! It goes by so quickly.
