The single most useful thing you can wear to a bridal boutique appointment is a nude, seamless strapless bra, or nothing on top at all. Everything else is secondary. Here is the full picture of how to prepare so your appointment is as useful as possible.
The Underwear Question
This comes first because it is the detail brides most often get wrong. Colourful underwear shows through light fabrics and changes how a dress reads visually. Heavily padded bras distort the fit of a structured bodice. Thongs and seamless knickers are ideal. A strapless bra in a nude tone close to your skin colour is great, but no bra is the gold standard, it lets you and your stylist see the silhouette of the dress without any visual noise and helps you feel the type of support the dress will give you accurately.
Some brides feel uncomfortable wearing very little under a sample gown. That is completely understandable. But know that your stylist has seen it all, and getting the most accurate read on how a dress fits you requires as few layers between you and the fabric as possible.
Shoes: You can leave your wedding shoes at home
Your appointment will be infinitely easier barefoot. High heels get caught in layers of dress fabric when trying on wedding dresses. That is why we highly recommend not wearing wedding shoes during your initial fitting appointments. Bridal boutiques have plinths you can stand on which will give you the height you need to envision your wedding dress.
Hair: Up or Down?
Put your hair up loosely if you are planning to wear it up on the day, or leave it down if that is your intention. Necklines, especially backs, look dramatically different depending on whether your hair is up or down. A high, open back on a gown is a completely different silhouette statement when your hair is gathered away from it. If you are undecided, bring a hair tie and try both in the dresses that interest you most.
What Not to Bring
- An entire entourage. More than two guests creates noise, competing opinions, and pressure. Bring one or two people whose opinion you genuinely trust and who will tell you the truth.
- Heavy jewellery. Necklaces and earrings you already own can interfere with how you read a neckline. Keep your accessories minimal unless you are specifically testing a piece against certain dress styles.
- A fully made-up face, but also a bare face. You want to look roughly as you will on the day. If you plan to wear makeup, wear a moderate amount. Full wedding makeup is unnecessary; a bare face can make it harder to visualise the final look.
What to Bring
- Your budget. Know your number before you walk in. A good stylist will not judge it; they will use it to narrow your edit.
- Your wedding date. This determines order windows and affects which gowns are realistic options.
- An open mind. The dress that looks best on you is often not the dress you thought you wanted. The best appointments happen when brides are willing to try something outside their original vision.
A Note on Self-Consciousness
Almost every bride arrives at her first appointment feeling some degree of self-consciousness, about her body, her budget, her indecisiveness. A good boutique creates a space where none of that matters. At The Wedding Collective, our appointments are private and one-on-one, and our stylists are trained to make you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.
